STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLO. (April 15, 2026) — Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) is launching its first-ever Gear Drive, a new initiative designed to directly support its field programs by equipping crews with the essential gear needed for an expanded season of conservation and backcountry work across Northwest Colorado.
As RMYC increases its emphasis on backcountry programming, the need for durable, reliable outdoor equipment continues to grow. For many of the young crew members involved, this program is their first opportunity to step into the backcountry, carry everything they need on their backs, and discover what they are capable of. The Gear Drive provides an impactful way for community members to support RMYC’s purpose while helping remove barriers for young people to get outside and participate in meaningful service.
“This is a simple, yet powerful way for our community to support both our crews and our mission,” said RMYC Development Director Lauren VandenHurk. “We’re collecting new and gently used outdoor gear and putting it straight into the hands of young people who are building trails, restoring ecosystems, and gaining confidence and skills through their time in the field.” RMYC is seeking clean, functional items including tents, backpacks, sleeping bags and pads, camp stoves, kitchen gear, outdoor apparel, footwear, water purifiers, and other outdoor essentials. Donated gear will be upcycled and redistributed, keeping usable items out of landfills while extending their lifespan and impact. A full list of items can be found here. Once the needs of RMYC crews are met, additional gear will be distributed to youth and families throughout the Yampa Valley, expanding access to outdoor recreation and ensuring resources reach those who need them most.
Community members are invited to drop off donations on May 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. at RMYC headquarters, located at 991 Captain Jack Drive in Steamboat Springs. (While you’re there, enjoy a cup of cold brew generously provided by Seedhouse Coffee Roasters, a perfect way to fuel your day while giving back.) RMYC is also accepting financial contributions to help round out crew gear needs. For those who are not local but would like to support the effort, donations can be made at https://www.rockymountainyouthcorps.org/.
